Why It Matters
Oil built Tulsa, and it built it beautifully. The boom of the 1910s and 1920s left a downtown of Art Deco towers that architecture people travel here specifically to see, plus Philbrook, the 1927 villa of oilman Waite Phillips, now a museum with more than 8,500 works and 23 acres of Italian-inspired gardens.
Tulsa also holds harder history. Greenwood Rising tells the story of Black Wall Street and the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, one of the worst acts of racial violence in American history, on the ground where it happened. It is the most important hour you can spend in this county.
The RV Adventurer's Take
Leave the rig and drive in. Route 66 runs through as 11th Street and Southwest Boulevard, strung with roadside giants: the 76-foot Golden Driller at Expo Square, the 21-foot Buck Atom Muffler Man and Stella Atom outside Buck Atom's Cosmic Curios, and the Neon Sign Park. Mother Road Market on Route 66 is a food hall built for exactly this kind of stop.
For green space, Gathering Place on the Arkansas River has been named one of the best city parks in America since it opened in 2018, with a five-acre playground, boathouse, and trails. Turkey Mountain adds real hiking inside the city limits.
Field Note
One to check before you plan around it: Gilcrease Museum has been closed for a multi-year renovation and is running a phased reopening starting fall 2026, so confirm status before you drive out. Philbrook's new Tandy Pavilion opened in spring 2026. And Route 66 through Tulsa is surface street, not the interstate, so take the exit and drive 11th Street if you came for the road.
History to See
Cain's Ballroom, open since 1924, is the Home of Bob Wills and the self-styled Carnegie Hall of Western Swing, still booking shows most nights. Pair it with the Woody Guthrie Center and the Bob Dylan Center downtown, which together hold two of the most significant archives in American music.
