Tulsa County

County Seat: Tulsa · ≈ 110 mi · 1 hr 45 min

Tulsa calls itself the Capital of Route 66, and it has the receipts: twenty-eight miles of Mother Road running straight through the middle of town, gateway arches at both ends, and a skyline of oil-money Art Deco that almost nobody expects. Oklahoma's second city is the biggest single stop in this guide.

Entry 12 · Route 66 · Classic Cars · Walkable Downtown

Creek County

County Seat: Sapulpa · ≈ 95 mi · 1 hr 35 min

Sapulpa bills itself as the heart of historic Route 66, and it earns it. A century-old truss bridge, a 66-foot gas pump, an armory full of classic cars, and one of the most walkable downtowns anywhere on the Mother Road, all a short hop southwest of Tulsa.

Entry 13 · Route 66 · Small Museums · Neon

Lincoln County

County Seat: Chandler · ≈ 75 mi · 1 hr 15 min

Lincoln County sits at the exact midpoint of the Mother Road's best Oklahoma stretch, roughly sixty miles from both OKC and Tulsa. Chandler and Stroud pack a WPA armory turned immersive museum, a 1939 stone diner that inspired a Pixar character, and some of the finest surviving neon on the road.

Entry 14 · Route 66 Origins · Theatre · Tribal History

Ottawa County

County Seat: Miami · ≈ 200 mi · 3 hr 5 min

The far northeast corner, where Oklahoma meets Kansas and Missouri, is where the Mother Road enters the state. Miami holds a 1929 movie palace that has never closed, the longest Main Street on Route 66, and a nine-foot-wide ribbon of original road that predates Route 66 itself.

Entry 15 · Route 66 · Space History · Easy I-40 Stop

Custer County

County Seat: Arapaho · ≈ 80 mi · 1 hr 15 min

Head straight west on I-40 and Custer County delivers two of the best indoor stops in the state back to back: the official Oklahoma Route 66 Museum in Clinton, and a Smithsonian-affiliated air and space museum in Weatherford built around a hometown astronaut who flew to the moon.
